Kennebunk Counselor Helps Others find a Healthy Work-Life Balance with New Card Sort Assessment

Anush Hansen, MA, MPH, LPC, introduces an interactive product or those seeking a career and life they love

KENNEBUNK, ME, May 26, 2021 – Career and Wellness Counselor Anush Hansen, MA, MPH, LPC, has created a Work-Life Balance Assessment to help people find balance and wellness in their work and personal lives. The card sort assessment, which is available in hard copy and online, helps individuals prioritize the aspects of their life that will help lead to a more healthy, happy, and fulfilling career and home life.

“When you’re feeling exhausted or burnt out it can be particularly challenging to find the time and energy to create balance and health in your life,” says Hansen. “The Work-Life Balance Assessment is easy to use, takes only 20 minutes to complete, and can be done on your own time.”

A card sort assessment is a tool commonly used by counseling professionals. Hansen’s Work-life Balance Assessment has two components: a deck of cards and an assessment guide. The cards display career priorities on one side and personal priorities on the other. The user simply sorts the cards into categories based on how important each career and personal priority is to them, then they use the follow-up questions in the guide to set goals and create a path to reach those priorities. Hansen has designed the Work-Life Balance Assessment for use by both professional career and mental health counselors, and the general public.

“Prioritizing the aspects of life that will lead to your own wellness is the first step to finding balance,” says Hansen. “The assessment guide and targeted follow-up questions help you make a plan to realize that balance.”

The COVID pandemic has led many people to rethink their careers and reprioritize their lives. Much like many other people during the last year, Hansen found it challenging to balance her own work and personal life during the pandemic. While supporting her second-grade son in online school, Hansen did not have the time to see as many counseling clients as she had prior to COVID, but she was able to develop and design her card sort idea during free moments. There was no better time to create a tool to help people sort out specifically what they want and need to feel health, happiness, and fulfillment in their life.

“The past year has been a frustrating and often chaotic time for so many people,” Hansen says. “When I started to hear from more and more clients about similar work-life challenges, and how it was leading them to question their career choices, I really wanted to help find a solution.”

Inspired by these calls for help, Hansen combined research and her own experience into developing the Work-Life Balance Assessment. The assessment can be completed easily online or by ordering a hard copy card deck and assessment through the website.

With nearly 18 years’ experience in the public health field designing and developing health-related assessments and surveys prior to becoming a counselor, Hansen is well versed in assessment tool development methodology, and skilled in helping her clients identify and articulate the factors in their lives that lead to creating a better work-life balance. In order to create the career and personal priorities included in the Work-Life Balance Assessment, Hansen compiled factors that came up most often for her clients as either promoting or hindering work-life balance, and started categorizing these factors within the eight domains of wellness and health. Field testing followed. Hansen collected feedback from career and mental health practitioners and a qualitative survey research expert to fine-tune her product.
